The Second World War changed much of the landscape of the parish. All the engine houses on the coast were demolished, the beach was mined and barricaded, and iron railings were removed to help the war effort An airfield was built at Cligga and used by Spitfires and Hurricanes. The army camp at Penhale also dates from this time. There were units of the Home Guard at Goonhavern, Rose, Penhallow and Perranporth. There was also a branch of the Secret Army. The picture here shows a plaque commemorating those RAF personnel who lost their lives serving in this area. This is not a museum item, it is located in the local Memorial hall. The museum has an item recovered from a crashed Spitfire and information about the operation of the airfield. There are also photographs and other items of interest. Children were evacuated to Perranporth During the Second World War and many have visited the museum with their memories of the past.
