Agriculture has changed over the centuries moving through mixed farming and dairy farming to more arable farming. Tourism has led to farm buildings being converted to holiday accommodation, the provision of camping sites, the emergence of riding stables and the production of cider and ice cream. Mechanisation has changed farming methods, horse drawn machines replacing manpower, and subsequently being replaced by ever more sophisticated tractors and powered machinery. For many centuries farming would have been a major employer. Without the modern mechanical aids of today the work would have been very labour intensive. The museum has a number of the old implements that were used during these early periods, when a days work could mean toiling from sun up to sun down.
Many of the current field boundaries can be seen on old maps such as the 1881 survey. Modern roads can be seen to follow the old tracks where once the only power for transport came from the horse.
